How to Play Tap Dungeon

Turn-based card mazes, not idle clicking — read the HUD before you tap.

How to Play Tap Dungeon

How to play Tap Dungeon is a different question from how to click a mobile idle game with a similar name. Xiao5 Studios built a turn-based dungeon crawler. You tap cards, buttons, and skills. You do not auto-farm a thousand stages while the phone is in your pocket. If you skipped the beginner guide, go back. This page is the loop once the first event is on screen.

Read the HUD like a contract

Official footage shows a consistent chrome:

  • Bottom-left portrait and resource pips.
  • A numbered skill strip (the filmed build shows slots labelled 1–7).
  • A long HP bar and a second resource bar beneath the skills.
  • An inventory grid on the bottom-right with gold beside it.
  • A settings cog in the corner.
  • A large left painting for the current event or biome, and a right column of choices.

If a button prints a yellow cost, believe it. Launch footage shows a silver key that subtracts 15 HP and a gold-pit option that pays 20 gold while removing 30 HP. The game is not hiding the knife. Players who ignore the right-hand column and tap the pretty art are the ones who call the combat “unfair” after the floor lord.

The card maze is the map

The store calls the dungeon a randomly generated card maze, and the trailer shows exactly that: a grid of face-up tiles. Forest cards, monster cards (snakes, dark beasts), chests, stone tunnels, statues, and shrines sit next to each other. You tap a tile, resolve a fight or an event, and the floor changes. This is closer to a tactical board than to a Diablo run.

Practical rules that follow from that layout:

  • Monster tiles are not optional flavour. If you ring a pack you cannot kill, the run is already asking you to leave.
  • Chest and shrine tiles are rewards only if you still have HP to spend on the next fight.
  • Tunnel and fork tiles are progress. Official text on a forest screen says the path to the next region needs the current floor lord dead. Do not stand at the fork tapping “leave” and hoping the gate opens from vibes.
  • Empty-looking forest cards can still be travel, rest, or a trap. Read the prompt.

The dungeon guide expands biomes. This page only needs you to stop treating the grid like a match-3 board.

Combat is turn-based, mixed, and unforgiving of mash

Steam tags list turn-based combat, dungeon crawler, and roguelite. The five classes — Swordsman, Assassin, Mage, Alchemist, Guardian — are sold as different styles, then the game invites you to mix skills, items, and sub-classes with “no restrictions.” That sentence is a dare. Mixing is legal. Mixing without a plan is how you meet an enemy with huge armor and a 30-damage skill that ticks for nothing. Launch-week comments described exactly that frustration. The answer is not a cheat sheet of unpublished skill IDs. The answer is:

  1. Identify whether the room is a pack, an elite, or a floor lord.
  2. Spend the skill that matches the job (chip armor, burst a single target, heal, or potion) instead of cycling 1–7 because they are lit.
  3. Keep a potion or event heal in reserve if the next tile is unknown.
  4. If your kit cannot dent the target, retreat to a rebirth and rebuild. See builds.

Sub-classes exist in the full version. The demo omits the talent system, so do not expect a full tree on the two-floor preview. Read the demo notes if your UI is missing nodes your friend screenshotted from the paid build.

Events are combat by other means

A beggar, a key pedestal, and a meat pit are all combat adjacent. They spend the same HP and gold you need for the floor lord. The correct play is often “leave.” The correct play is sometimes “pay the blood” if a key opens a route you cannot get another way. The artifact page is the catalogue of that mindset. Do not farm every event because completionism feels safe. Completionism is how you arrive at the boss with 12 HP and a backpack of keys you never used.

Controls, as far as we can honestly state them

Xiao5 has not published a public keybind table. Steam marks the title with a controller tag wizard, which usually means Steam Input is at least in the conversation. What we can see in footage is mouse-driven: a cursor over choice buttons, card tiles, and loot popups that offer “take all” versus “skip.” If you play on a laptop trackpad, slow down. Mis-taps on a −30 HP option are not a graphics bug.

Until an official overlay exists, use the in-game settings cog rather than a fan-made keyboard overlay copied from another crawler. This wiki will not invent WASD bindings to look complete. The dedicated controls page is the cursor sheet. The combat page is the fight sheet.

How to beat a floor without a spoiler table

You beat a floor by:

  • Entering with a class you understand (class picker).
  • Refusing event trades that brick the HP bar.
  • Killing the floor lord before demanding the next region.
  • Treating hidden bosses as optional until the kit is stable (hidden bosses).

You do not beat a floor by watching a fake YouTube ID. At launch week there was no widely indexed English walkthrough video with a stable public ID we could embed. If Xiao5 or a creator uploads one, this page can grow a mid-article embed. Until then, the trailer frames and the Steam description are the evidence.

After you can clear without panicking

Move to builds and the class tier list. Check launch notes if a hotfix landed. The review is for the friend who is still on the store page. Play is the loop. The rest of the wiki is how not to repeat the same death.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Launch-week answers for new adventurers from the Duchy of Lyle.

Is Tap Dungeon an idle tapper?

No. It is a turn-based card-maze crawler. Taps are decisions. If you want an idle hero collector, you are looking at a different game with a similar English title.

How do I unlock the next region?

Official footage states the fork to the next area needs the current floor lord defeated. See the dungeon guide for biome context.

Why did my damage bounce off an enemy?

Launch-week players reported extremely high armor targets. Mix armor-breaking tools into the build rather than stacking raw hit skills that the store never claimed would ignore defense.

Where are the keybinds listed?

Not in a public studio post we can cite. Use in-game settings. Mouse clicks on cards and event buttons are the loop shown in official footage.
